Boise State notches impressive victory — not in a football game, but in basketball contest

Feels really weird to type the following:

Boise State notches milestone victory – in basketball.

Indeed it happened on Wednesday night when the Broncos stunned No. 11 Creighton 83-70 for only the program’s sixth-ever victory against a ranked foe.

The Bluejays are the highest-ranked squad Boise State has ever defeated on the hardwood and the victory serves notice that third-year coach Leon Rice has the program headed in the right direction.

Sophomore guard Derrick Marks scored a career-best 35 points – 28 of them in the second half, including a stretch in which he scored 18 consecutive Broncos’ points.

That is called taking over a game, folks.

Boise State is 5-1 and its lone loss came when it battled powerful Michigan State to the wire on the road last week before falling.

Winning at Creighton and going head-to-head in impressive fashion against the Spartans in Big Ten country are significant developments for a program predicted to finish eighth in the nine-team Mountain West.

A key step for Boise State will be having a respectable conference season. The Broncos were 3-11 in Mountain West play last season and the conference is again packed at the top of the league this season.

The populace is highly apathetic about college basketball so notching a home upset over San Diego State, Nevada-Las Vegas or New Mexico later this season would be a momentous accomplishment.

Rice will certainly enjoy his first signature win as Boise State coach but he was already putting the victory in perspective when he met with reporters – none from the Boise area, sadly but not surprisingly – after the game.

“We don’t want to be defined by the win in November,” Rice said. “Hey, it was a great win against the 11th-ranked team in the country and a tough place to play, and they played their tails off and I’m so proud of them. But we have to get a lot better to compete in our league.”

So true. College basketball is filled with early-season upsets and Boise State finally joined the club.

The trick is to build on a terrific upset and launch the program forward.
