College basketball season actually tips off tonight — how is that remotely possible?

The college basketball season tipped off tonight and I am still trying to figure out how that happened.

The season keeps starting earlier and earlier and it seems downright odd to have it commence in the first third of November.

I can recall having a dinner/basketball date with some lucky young lady in which the contest was San Diego State’s opener and it was held two days after Thanksgiving.

Remember – the NCAA says these guys are all student-athletes but they don’t seem to mind starting the season earlier and earlier and cutting into the time in which players can focus on their studies.

By 2020, I’m sure the season will be starting one day after Halloween.

Should be an interesting season for San Diego State, the program I covered for 13 years as a newspaper beat reporter. The Aztecs open the season as the No. 20-ranked team in the nation and anything short of reaching the NCAA tournament’s Sweet Sixteen will make it a disappointing campaign.

The Aztecs return Mountain West Conference Player of the Year Jamaal Franklin, four-year standout guard Chase Tapley and solid point guard Xavier Thames as well as having impact transfers J.J. O’Brien (Utah) and Dwayne Polee II (St. John’s) and prep All-American Winston Shepard joining the mix. (see the stellar preview here –

At the other end of the Mountain West spectrum is Boise State, a program I see a lot now while raking in the cash as a freelance writer. The Broncos were often overmatched in the Mountain West last season but return nearly all their key cogs, led by sophomores Anthony Drmic and Derrick Marks. (see the outstanding preview here ––Boise-State-Preview).

Guess it’s about time I accept that the college basketball season has begun.
