Not-so-humble Jimmer reminds teammates who wins games

Shortly after leading Brigham Young to an impressive victory over San Diego State in the biggest Mountain West Conference ever played, Jimmer Fredette eyed his teammates in the locker room before throwing all humility aside.

“You’re welcome,” Fredette said.

One of his teammates asked for what, giving Fredette the opportunity to remind the rest of the Cougars that they wouldn’t be a Top 10 team without him.

“For winning the game for you,” Fredette said.

So it won’t go down as a modest moment but it’s not like the guy who has prompted “Jimmermania” was lying. Fredette scored 43 points in then-No. 9 BYU’s 71-58 victory over then-No. 4 San Diego State in the showdown that captured national attention.

That’s 60 percent of his team’s points against a Top 5 team that happens to be a pretty good defensive squad. That’s 15 more points than the rest of the BYU players scored combined.

The victory temporarily pushed BYU into first place in the Mountain West but the Cougars collapsed in the second half against New Mexico three days later, losing 86-77 at The Pit in Albuquerque.

There’s been no word on whether any of Fredette’s teammates hit him up with this question after the game: “Jimmer, how come you didn’t win this game for us?”

BYU (20-2, 6-1) and San Diego State (21-1, 6-1) are tied for first place in the conference but the Aztecs remained ahead of the Cougars in the poll despite losing to BYU. San Diego State is ranked seventh in the Associated Press poll and sixth in the coaches poll. BYU is ranked eighth by the writers and ninth by the coaches.

San Diego State rebounded from the BYU loss to trounce Wyoming by 39 points but faces a tough test this Wednesday when it visits Colorado State. The Rams (15-6, 5-2) are serious contenders for an NCAA tournament berth and are receiving stellar play from forward Andy Ogide, who is on his way to first-team all-conference honors.

Ogide has a big opportunity to make an impression on Wednesday with all the NBA scouts following San Diego State forward Kawhi Leonard.

UNLV (16-5, 4-3) is in fourth place and also in the mix for an NCAA tournament spot. New Mexico (15-7, 3-4) is rejuvenated after the upset of BYU but still resides in a tie for fifth place with Air Force (12-8 3-4) and Utah (10-11, 3-4). Air Force beat TCU on Saturday for its first conference road win in over three years.

Wyoming (8-13, 1-6) and TCU (10-13, 1-7) are already playing out the string with half the conference slate still to go. The Horned Frogs suspended Ronnie Moss, their top player, further diminishing their chances of being competitive in the tough basketball conference.

To be honest, I don’t buy that story about Jimmer after the SDSU game for a second.

    • Joseph says:

HA! Dude, come on! If you’re going to lie at least make it some what believable.

If you’re bored go write fan fiction on the Harry Potter boards.

  2. MO says:

You are a liar. Jimmer Fredette is the most humble college star you will find and this is a total fabrication.

  3. Brett says:

Why is there no name on who wrote this? I doubt the statements are true or this is an example of 25% of the conversation and a reporter twisting it.

  4. Carlos Quezada says:

Looks like an obscure blogger is trying to draw attention by whatever means possible.

  5. Brandon says:

This article is crap. You probably completely took those quotes out of context or made them up, no other media sources are reporting anything like this, Jimmer is awesome and all reports indicate the team has amazing chemistry. Even if he did say “You’re welcome” he probably said it in a joking manner, but I honestly have not heard this anywhere else and I think you’re full of it.

Dave Rose has said that this team has some of the best chemistry in all of his coaching years. Not buying this article!

  6. Brian says:

Baloney… I don’t buy that you were in the BYU locker room after SDSU.

  7. Tom Green says:

Ha ha nice try at a smear campain. Let’s just make crap up. Ha ha what a tool

  8. Brady says:

Pretty pathetic article! No sources. Just trying to build hype around your new blog , by piggybacking on Jimmer’s success. You are a sad man!

  9. Guy says:

Gotta call BS on this “locker room” story about Jimmer. Totally out of character with anyone who knows Jimmer and with the BYU team chemistry. What’s your source?

  10. Mike says:

I call bullcrap. State your source.

  11. Brad Bond says:

    What is your source?

I dont believe your comical story for a second. I know Jackson Emery personally (my son and Jackson are buddies) and Jackson claims Jimmer is shockingly humble and even embarrassed by his success.
Some journalism you go there. You would embarrass The Enquirer.

  12. will says:

Why do you feel the need to lie about Jimmer? There is no way he said that. If he did, there would be several legitimate sources citing it.

  13. matt says:

Stop being a hater. Your intentions are clear.

  14. Gary Smith says:

You are a stupid face liar head.

  15. jonnylingo says:

Lame. Anybody who is close to the program knows this is bs.

  16. Jimbo says:

This guy just wants your email. Don’t give in to writing comments as it just ads to his fuel. This writer is a moron with no real facts, just trying to get attention. Complete idiot!

  17. byudeepthrowt says:

The Jimmer comment you allege, is, plainly put, a fabrication. Nice try stirring up divisions on team, but this exchange never happened.

  18. Mike says:

You dont want to make up lies about The Jimmer. You dont want to make The Jimmer mad.

  19. Dan says:

Total Defamation of Character, watch out.

  20. John Richardson says:

How about a source? You can’t just throw out salacious comments about The Jimmer (one of the most well-liked player in BYU history) and not provide a source. Nice try, though.

  21. Home says:

Jimmer would never say that…and how would you know what was said in the locker room anyway, mr sports blog guy?

  22. Golden says:

BULL CRAP. Anyone who knows Jimmer knows this story is BUNK. Funny story though…

  23. deckard67 says:

  24. BYU DUDE says:

    Lier Lier pants on fire.

  25. Geoff J says:

It’s obviously a joke people. Mellow out.

  26. Teammate says:

Were you in the locker room? I didn’t think so. You are pathetic in completely fabricating a story to team a young man down. What is your problem?

  27. J.J. Johnson says:

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
You are what is wrong with this world! Hate! Ignorance! Ill-willed intentions! You are an absolute joke of a righter and an indecent human being.

  28. Big Bro says:

And who told you he said that? Like all the other comments, I’m calling this blogger out for BS.

  29. SDSU Fan says:

BS!!! This is the biggest joke for an article i have ever read….. You sure know how to grab attention though so maybe you can do it in an ethical way next time you write. You just got JIMMERED!

  30. Thomas S. Monson says:

    Figggitaboutit!

It did Not Happen, an apology would be appreciated.

I Graduated from the University of Utah, but I pull for BYU. This one is way over the top.

  31. Nicetry says:

Man you are an idiot. Funny stuff if that’s what you were trying to do but not as funny as my blog. jaredslighterside.blogspot.com

  32. J says:

Sounds like you’re jealous! Oh, and your welcome… for commenting on your pathetic BLOG!

  33. Noah Hartsock says:

This is not true. Jimmer’s a very humble guy. He’s the ultimate teammate. Don’t lie.

  34. Danny says:

I’d never even heard of this deadbeat writer until I stumbled upon this abysmal “story.” You can tell this guy is begging for attention when he resorts to just completely making up stories. SDSU fans have GOT to be the most bitter fans in college sports. SCOREBOARD in both sports, losers.

  35. Brad "Godzilla" Candland says:

    Mr. Sportsblog,
You are a complete weiner. Quote your sources or they are invalid, or my name is’nt Brad “Godzilla” Candland.

  36. Thom says:

Sounds like a Cher CD – I’m not buying it!

  37. Douche baggins says:

You and me have a lot in common, Mr. Sports Blog Guy.

  38. scott says:

This does not sound accurate. All sources who are close to Jimmer say he is a very humble guy.

  39. Art Vandelay says:

This story sounds like a plague common among many of today’s youth that don’t understand team work will always win out over individual play.

  40. Surfah says:

Jimmer is wicked sick brah, skills beyond anything you could ever have. On the real son, I heard he even beat Austin Ainge and cougjunkie in a free throw shooting contest at University Mall once.

  41. Babs says:

Jimmer is so amazing he makes me want to find out for myself if the book of mormon is true.

  42. BYU Grounds says:

Hmm you write for San Diego, still mad about football and now ruining your perfect bball season. Get over the hate, embrace Jimmermania!

  43. waupinmon says:

    Have a banana.

  44. scott715 says:

I call BS on this story

  45. landpoke says:

I don’t know what it is with you people.

  46. Donny and Marie Osmond says:

    Bullshit.

  47. Steven Archibald says:

    I totally believe this story!
I also believe that 9/11 was an inside job, Michael Jackson did nothing to those kids, the New World Order will soon take over the world, and U2 is a great rock band!
