It certainly wasn’t a classic Game 7 if you like offensive basketball. It most definitely was a classic if you are into defense.

But years from now, most people will remember only one thing: That the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Boston Celtics in seven games in the NBA Finals.

The Lakers won their 16th NBA title on Thursday night with an 83-79 victory over the Celtics. Los Angeles has now won back-to-back championships.

Kobe Bryant made just 6-of-24 shots while scoring 23 points and winning Most Valuable Player honors. Bryant has now won five NBA titles.

Lakers coach Phil Jackson now has won 11 NBA titles as he ponders whether to return and seek a threepeat. Los Angeles won three straight titles from 2000-02.

The Lakers are now one title behind Boston’s 17, which ranks as most in history. It was the fifth time Los Angeles and Boston had met in an NBA Finals Game 7 and the first time the Lakers were the victorious team.

Ron Artest (20 points) and Pau Gasol (19 points, 18 rebounds) were solid contributors for the Lakers.

Paul Pierce had 18 points and 10 rebounds for Boston and Kevin Garnett added 17 points. Streaky Ray Allen was on the downside of his shooting, going 3-of-14 and scoring just 13 points.

The Lakers shot just 32.5 percent from the field while Boston finished at 40.8 percent. Boston led most of the game but was horrid in the fourth quarter.

The Celtics struggled so badly it made someone – well, me – wonder how come Michael Finley didn’t get at least get a few minutes. Yeah, he is no longer a star and just a bit player now, but it couldn’t have hurt to have thrown the former All-Star into the mix.

Regardless, Boston had a 3-2 series lead before the Lakers won the final two games of the series on their homecourt. No matter how offensively-challenged the final game was, Los Angeles deserved the title.

Whether you win pretty or ugly, the championship ring fits the same.
