So you thought New Mexico’s fast start was just a mirage and wouldn’t continue? Look again, the Lobos were the first team in the nation to reach 11 wins and sit at 11-0 entering Saturday’s game against Creighton.

Steve Alford’s young team has meshed well and can do a variety of things. Lobos forward Roman Martinez tied a school record for 3-point percentage accuracy (88.9 percent) by making 8-of-9 3-pointers against the University of San Diego and a few days later, New Mexico gutted out a neutral-court victory in Houston over Texas A&M that left Aggies coach Mark Turgeon crying like a baby that he even bothered to schedule the Lobos.

You know, if you can’t beat a team, try to avoid them. Can somebody buy Turgeon a Hello Kitty costume so he can dress the part?

Elsewhere around the conference, Brigham Young and UNLV are 9-1 with the Rebels getting blasted by Kansas State at the Orleans Arena for their first loss. San Diego State (8-2) rode the back of freshman Kawhi Leonard to beat Arizona for the first time in 26 years (when Michael Cage was the Big Man on Campus) and Colorado State (7-3) put together a modest three-game winning streak.

Air Force (5-3) is also above .500, while TCU, Utah and Wyoming all sport 5-5 records. Utah was frustrated by an overtime loss to Oklahoma and Wyoming put up a good fight at No. 9 Tennessee for 25 minutes before wilting under the Volunteers’ pressure.
